History/Overview
Introduced in the early 1990s, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first upscale SUV model of the brand’s modern era. Building on the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer, which dated back to the 1960s (and whose name has been revived for an all-new 2022 model), the Grand Cherokee was one of the first mainstream SUVs marketed to an audience seeking upscale comfort and refinement.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, Jeep has redesigned the Grand Cherokee into an all-new fifth-generation model.
Available Trims
Jeep offers the new Grand Cherokee in Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. Depending on trim, power is from a 3.6L V6 engine, or a 5.7L V8, both of which are matched with an eight-speed transmission and four-wheel drive.
The 2022 Grand Cherokee lineup also includes a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant, and a stretched L version, both of which are covered in separate buyer’s guide entries.
Standard Features
Laredo trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, passive keyless entry, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a digital gauge cluster, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone A/C, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and six-speaker audio. Safety kit includes active lane management, adaptive cruise, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation with pedestrian/cyclist detection, and rear parking sensors.
Altitude adds 20-inch wheels, and leather upholstery.
Limited gets 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, heated second-row seats, a power front passenger seat, and an integrated garage remote.
Overland uses 20-inch wheels, and adds power-folding side mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, nine-speaker audio, a hands-free tailgate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power-folding third-row seat, off-road/trailer hitch cameras, and rain-sensing wipers.
Summit brings a 10.1-inch touchscreen, four-zone A/C, a backup camera washer, surround-view cameras, side distance warning, highway driving assist, traffic sign recognition, intersection collision assist, and parking assist.
Finally, Summit Reserve adds 21-inch wheels, upgraded leather, a 19-speaker McIntosh stereo, and a front passenger touchscreen.
Key Options
A Laredo luxury tech group adds a power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, satellite radio, and wireless phone charging. Limited’s luxury tech II pack adds passive keyless, auto-dimming mirrors, ventilated front seats, power steering column adjustments, surround-view cameras, and a backup camera washer.
In Overland models, you can add an advanced “protech” group with active driver assists, a head-up display, off-road camera, intersection collision alert, night vision, and surround-view cameras.
Fuel Economy
Jeep’s fuel consumption estimates for the Grand Cherokee are 12.3/9.2 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 3.6L V6, and 16.7/10.9 L/100 km for V8 models.
Competition
Consider entry-grade versions of the Grand Cherokee an alternative to vehicles like the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, and Chevrolet Blazer. At the high end of the range, a well-equipped Grand Cherokee is a strong upscale value next to a Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, or Audi Q7.
